Autumn motive - Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. 143 x 98 cm

Changes in life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries had a great influence on the work of Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov. The departing noble culture, deserted estates and parks determined the theme of his subsequent works. The artist creates a whole cycle of invented genre scenes unfolding against the backdrop of ancient interiors and picturesque corners of nature, which began with this picture. He considered the most important emotional emotions and feelings that this picture conveys.

Early autumn, a clear warm day. The sun's rays play silver glare on the yellowing leaves of the thick bushes. In a wooden arbor twined with wild grapes, two young men sit silently.

A young man in a white wig, dressed in a bright blue satin suit and snow-white stockings, leaning forward, sits on a bench. The hands on his knees are squeezed into the lock, giving out internal tension. The head is lowered, the face is not visible. All the arguments in the conversation are exhausted, and he is very upset by the result.

The young lady sitting opposite, slightly turning away from the interlocutor, looks to the side. A light white and blue airy dress sets off tanned skin, a pearl string beads adorn an elegant neck. Red-brown hair, laid in a simple hairstyle, reveals a sad and slightly tired face with delicate features. She seems calm, but she can see her hands tapping a beautiful pale pink rose lying on her lap. The conversation was not easy for her, but she had already decided everything for herself.

And let the artist not observe historical authenticity, because the costumes of heroes from different eras, it is much more important for him to convey the feelings and experiences of the characters.

Light, joyful gamut of colors: white, sky blue, olive green with bright spots of red and pinkish-orange, together with smooth, flowing lines create a lyrical and peaceful mood. However, the plastic body of the gentleman and the young lady, their poses, talks about dreams that are not destined to come true, about broken hopes. And the autumn melody of ancient sadness is very clearly audible.
